Alexandria African American Heritage Park

Tuesday, April 13 , Bus Departs at 2:00 p.m.

This 7.6 acre park was designed by nationally recognized landscape architectural firm EDAW, with memorial sculptures by Washington, D.C., sculptor Jerome Meadows. The focal point of the park is a sculpture group of bronze trees called "Truths That Rise From the Roots Remembered." This formation acknowledges the contributions of African Americans to the growth of Alexandria. Other smaller sculptures throughout the park commemorate historic African American Neighborhoods and the people known and unknown buried on this site. Enjoy an afternoon walking this scenic area in Alexandria and learn more about the history of the African American Culture.

Sign up in the Resident Business Center – Limited to 14 residents

Masks required – social distance throughout the park.

A primary concern of Goodwin House is the welfare of its residents and staff. Covid-19 forced us to cancel excursions. Remember the trip to Winterthur and Longwood Gardens that we had to cancel last Spring? It’s back! We hope to visit Winterthur and Longwood Gardens on an overnight trip, May 12-13 (Wednesday and Thursday) in 2021. Because of social distancing, the trip is limited to just 25 residents – and it is already fully subscribed.   But a Wait List is available!

Of course, If the pandemic is still rampant, we will have to cancel. But we can continue to hope. On the drawing board is a Fall 2021 trip – and it is more likely to be realized. The pandemic should be under control by then. In late October, the countryside should be ablaze with color. On day one, we’ll leave here for Monticello, having lunch (on our own). After lunch, we’ll enjoy a signature tour of Montpelier (Madison’s home) then drive on to our hotel and dinner.  On day two, after breakfast we’ll visit Monticello (Jefferson’s home).  After lunch we’ll leave for home.

(Note: The committee is not meeting at this time.) The Committee meets the third Monday of each month at 3:30 PM in the Board Room. All interested residents are invited to attend.

(Planning of day trips by Trips & Outings Committee is on hold.) Other committees as well as staff also plan trips to provide residents continuing opportunities to learn and to enjoy the world outside our walls. Trips organized by other committees and departments can be found on the Coming Events page.

Residents of GHBC and GHA as well as members of Goodwin House At Home and the Priority Club are part of our GH Family. Families do things together, and friends of family can be invited to join the group. We usually plan several Family trips each year.

       The Barnes Foundation

Buses will pick up residents from the main lobby unless otherwise designated.
