Giving Through The Employee Gift Fund
Say Thanks by Giving - The 2019 campaign came to a glorious end on December 6 when employees received gift checks from the Employee Gift Fund co-chairs. Staff shared their thanks for their gifts by singing, saying Merry Christmas in their own languages, pictures, photo album, banners, gift box displays, and videos. A joyous celebration! 2019 co-chairs Barbara Hatheway and Carol Lewis wish to thank GHBC's generous residents who contributed to a very successful campaign. Goodwin House has a very strict no gifts policy. Employees are forbidden to accept gifts or gratuities of any kind. Doing so leads to their dismissal. However, in the fall, residents conduct an Employee Gift Fund campaign to show their appreciation to the employees. Contributions to this fund can be made at any time by writing a check to the order of GHBC Employee Gift Fund and depositing it in the labeled box at the back of the Mailroom. Many residents find it easier to budget a monthly amount rather than a large amount in November. You can donate any time!

Residents who are able to set up automatic payments from their bank accounts may contribute monthly (or on any regular basis) by designating “GHBC Employee Gift Fund” in the Pay To line of their check. The check is to be sent to

Residents decide what to donate, weighing gratitude to staff against their own financial circumstances. A suggested range of giving is $4 to $7 per resident per day for 365 days. Residents may give more, of course! 

The Gift Fund is our way to express gratitude for the loving service of our employees. It is nearly impossible to count the ways in which they help us every single day: Daily meals in three venues, weekly housekeeping, laundry, trash and snow removal, maintenance and repairs, and much, much more. GHBC “by the numbers” is impressive. One amazing number: In 2018, Security received 20, 308 packages and delivered 6,233!

Donations to EGF are not tax deductible. They are gifts, not tips. Tips are taxable and we do not want the employees to have to pay taxes on them. The campaign is not a 501(c)(3). It is a resident run campaign, has a resident-managed bank account, and nothing is tax deductible. 


The committee is responsible for the overall operation of the annual campaign to solicit and receive monetary donations from residents and others for distribution to GHBC employees as gifts at the holiday season.
