PALLIATIVE CARE (Now Care Connections)
Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family.
Palliative care at Goodwin House is provided by a specially-trained nurse practitioner and physician who work together with the patient's doctors to provide an extra layer of support. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.
Palliative care practitioners are trained in how to discuss important issues such as disease progression and options for care based on what is most important to the patient. These discussions are encouraged early in the disease process to help guide the patient's care.
Palliative care consultations are fee-for-service covered by Medicare Part B and by some insurance plans.
